Today I’ll walk you through how to buy your very first crypto step-by-step — using Kraken.com as an example. But don’t worry: the steps are nearly the same on most exchanges, so this guide gives you a clear idea of what to expect.

Beginner’s Guide to Buying Bitcoin on Kraken

This guide is for first-time Bitcoin buyers in the Netherlands, and also works for users in Germany, Belgium, and Portugal. We’ll walk you through creating a Kraken account, verifying your identity, depositing Euros, buying Bitcoin, and safely moving it to a cold wallet like Ledger or Trezor.

Step 1: Create Your Kraken Account

  • Go to www.kraken.com and click Create Account.
  • Enter your email, choose a username, and set a strong password.
  • Agree to the Terms of Service and confirm your email via the link Kraken sends.
Tip: Use a unique password you haven’t used elsewhere.

Step 2: Verify Your Identity (KYC)

  • Log into Kraken, click your name (top right) and choose Get Verified.
  • Choose the “Intermediate” level for SEPA and crypto withdrawals.
  • Upload a valid ID (passport or ID card) and proof of residence (utility bill or bank statement).
Tip: Make sure your documents are clear and not expired.

Step 3: Secure Your Account

  • Go to Security > Two-Factor Authentication.
  • Choose an app like Google Authenticator or Authy.
  • Save your backup codes offline (not on your phone or computer).
Important: Never share your password or 2FA codes with anyone.

Step 4: Deposit Euros

Option 1: iDeal (Netherlands only)

  • Go to Funding > Deposit > EUR > iDeal.
  • Select your bank and follow instructions. Funds appear instantly.

Option 2: SEPA (for Germany, Belgium, Portugal)

  • Go to Funding > Deposit > EUR > SEPA.
  • Note the bank details and reference code.
  • Make a SEPA transfer from your bank and include the exact reference code.
Tip: Test with a small deposit (e.g. €50) to start.

Step 5: Buy Bitcoin

  • Go to Buy Crypto and choose Bitcoin (BTC).
  • Enter how much you want to buy or how much EUR to spend.
  • Select your Euro balance and confirm the transaction.
Tip: Bitcoin prices fluctuate. Always check the total before confirming.

Step 6: Transfer to a Cold Wallet

  • Set up your hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor) and write down your seed phrase securely.
  • Get your Bitcoin receiving address (starts with "bc1" or "1").
  • In Kraken, go to Funding > Withdraw > Bitcoin (BTC).
  • Click Add Address, paste your cold wallet address, and give it a label.
  • Send a small test amount first (e.g. 0.001 BTC).
  • If successful, send the rest and confirm with your 2FA.
⚠️ Always double-check the address! A mistake here can’t be undone.

Step 7: Keep Your Bitcoin Safe

  • Store your seed phrase in a safe offline place (never digital).
  • Keep your Kraken 2FA backup codes secure.
  • Regularly check your cold wallet to ensure your Bitcoin is still there.

Differences for Germany, Belgium & Portugal

  • Germany: Use SEPA (iDeal not supported).
  • Belgium: Use SEPA (Bancontact not supported).
  • Portugal: Use SEPA (no local options like iDeal).
